Inattention is on the rise and, according to research, is one of the most common reasons for grade 1-6 student referrals to special education in the United States and Canada. While nearly 70% of students receiving special education services ages 6-21 in the United States have a diagnosis associated with difficulty initiating, focusing, or sustaining attention, attention-deficit (ADD), attention-deficit /hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is most often attributed as the cause of neurodevelopmental and learning difficulty.

This lecture aims to take a closer look at the ADHD diagnosis in order to provide a more in-depth understanding of how this disorder is clinically and educationally defined (based on MDS-V and the areas of the brain affected). In addition to common clinical classifications (inattentive type, hyperactive-impulsive type, and combined type), other ADHD subtypes described (by Dr. Daniel Amen) based on SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) imaging analyses are explored.

The lecture discusses the possibilities of clinical reasoning in formulating a comprehensive treatment approach to support individuals with ADHD.

An overview of selected MNRI® techniques are shared to provide participants a foray into the effect of the MNRI® reflex integration exercises on children and adults with ADD/ADHD.  Selected brain mapping studies conducted with children diagnosed with ADD/ADHD who received the MNRI® Program is presented. This research quantitatively demonstrates the changes in neuromodulation and neurodevelopment through the application of the MNRI® modality.
