Advancements in NeuroDevelopment: Dyslexia and the Effect of MNRI® Visual Reflexes Program. Perspectives from a Developmental Optometrist

Estimates of the incidence of dyslexia vary significantly, affecting between 5%-20% of the population as a whole. Inconsistencies in how dyslexia is defined, the arbitrary nature of cut-off points, and difficulty distinguishing dyslexics from below-average readers hinder both identification and effective treatment. This lecture provides a research-based overview of current theories of dyslexia, including areas of brain involvement, implicated cognitive processes, and how the disorder is clinically and educationally identified. Factors believed to contribute to dyslexia are also discussed to support clinical reasoning. In addition, the visual aspects of dyslexia diagnosis and treatment and the relationship of reflexes, nutrition/gut function, cerebellar dysfunction, and polyvagal theory are shared from the unique perspective of a developmental optometrist with an advanced degree in education.

This lecture/presentation concludes with selected MNRI® reflex integration exercises to provide participants with a sampling of the MNRI® techniques that are effective for supporting individuals with dyslexia.
